One of the most shocking transfers in history may be about to happen as Sheffiled United have been linked with Bayern Munich legend Franck Ribery.

Yes, you read that right. The former France international could be on his way to Bramall Lane according to reports from German news outlet Kicker (June 13, 8:00AM).

The winger’s contract is up at the Bavarian club and he is available on a free transfer. His next destination could very well be Bramall Lane.

13 years after being scouted by Sir Alex Ferguson it may be time for the 36-year-old to move to the Premier League.

Having achieved almost everything in the game of football it isn’t too far-fetched that Ribery would want to try his hand in England. We have previously seen Fernando Hierro sign for Bolton and Edwin van der Sar join Fulham so it truly is impossible to write this one off.

Which Sheffield United players won't cut it in the top-flight next season? Ingood Nick discusses in the video below...

Indeed, Ribery would arrive in Yorkshire as a huge name, and he would undoubtedly be a statement of intent for the newly-promoted side, but would his arrival be a good thing? Football FanCast’s writers have their say.

Luke Glanville

“If Franck Ribery signs for Sheffield United this summer then that's me just about done with modern football. The legendary Frenchman would obviously be a remarkable acquisition for the Blades and to say it would be interesting to finally see him in the Premier League would be a huge understatement. As he has proved at Bayern Munich recently, despite being 36, Ribery still has something to offer in Europe's top five leagues. A move would cost nothing as well. Therefore, the Steel City outfit should try to make it happen.”

Billy Meyers

“Take a leaf out of Fulham's book, and avoid signings like this one Sheffield United. Rarely has it been the case where a marquee name such as Jean Michael Seri and others know what it takes to come out of a relegation battle smelling of roses, and the Blades would be better suited to sticking with what they have. As far as risks to squad morale and the wage bill go, this is a huge one.”

Matt Dawson

“This would be one of the most bizarre transfers in Premier League history. The fact that Franck Ribery and Sheffield United are being muttered in the same breath is astonishing. I don't think anyone could doubt whether this would be a good signing or not. Despite being quite prone to injury, it would be a wonderful statement of intent from the Blades. If they can afford his wages, they should be doing everything they can to convince him to come to England.”
