According to reports in the Daily Mail (May 16, Page 56) - via HITC - Sheffield United have eyed up a move for Millwall striker Lee Gregory following their promotion to the Premier League.

Stoke City are reportedly in the driver’s seat to land the striker’s signature, but the Blades are supposedly also interested.

Doesn't make sense

Does Chris Wilder not realise his side have been promoted to the Premier League?

The Yorkshire club already have a plethora of tried and tested Championship level strikers amongst their ranks, so why are they looking to add another?

It’s not as if Gregory is a young up and coming striker who has been scoring plenty at that level either. He’s a 30-year-old who scored only 10 times last season.

Wilder has often raised players’ performance levels when they play under him but to still be looking for signings like this while they’re in the Premier League shows a massive lack of ambition.

Perhaps the club aren’t willing to give their manager the transfer budget necessary to shop for some of the more prominent names in the footballing world.

Madine the better option

One thing Gregory can bring to the table at Bramall Lane is a physical presence up front. The 6 ft 2 striker is a real nuisance for defenders and has a significant aerial presence.

The problem is that there is a player who already fits that mould who Sheffield United should be going for instead.

If the Blades aren’t going to spend big on a striker this summer, then there is no reason for them to bring in the Millwall man rather than Gary Madine.

The Cardiff striker spent the second half of last season on loan at the Yorkshire club, where he put in some fantastic performances and became an integral part of the team, both on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Ideally, the Blades would spend a decent amount on a proven Premier League striker, but if they are to look for a cheaper option, Madine must be their first port of call rather than Gregory.
