Sheffield Wednesday have ‘more irons in the fire’ than just Connor Wickham

It appears as if Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer saga this window is surrounding the pursuit of former loan striker Connor Wickham with conflicting reports starting to emerge, the latest coming from Sheffield Star journalist Dom Howson.

What’s he said?

The Owls have been linked with the Crystal Palace frontman for the part of a week with the Daily Mail first running a story claiming the south Yorkshiremen were set to sign him on loan.

Alan Nixon then added fuel to the fire when tweeting that the 26-year-old was ‘most likely’ to make the switch to Hillsborough this month.

And now Dom Howson has played down the links by claiming that manager Garry Monk and those involved in the transfer process have more options they are considering.

When asked if Wickham was signing soon, he replied:

“No. Wickham is a player Wednesday’s hierarchy have discussed, but they have more irons in the fire.”

Who?

Wickham has endured an injury-ravaged four years where he’s only managed to feature in 48 matches of which just 26 were starts.

That’s an awfully poor return for someone that cost the Eagles £9m in the summer of 2019, although calf strains and cruciate ligament damage have played havoc.

So who else could be on the radar?

Wednesday have been linked with permanent moves to Charlton’s wantaway forward Lyle Taylor, who the club are willing to listen to offers for and Bristol Rovers’ Jonson Clarke-Harris.

However, Monk has hinted towards them using the loan market instead.

Arsenal starlet Eddie Nketiah looks set for Bristol City while the Owls lost out on Rhian Brewster to Swansea City.

The latest striker to be mooted with a temporary switch to Hillsborough is Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle, who Wednesday will know well from last season after he notched 24 goals whilst on loan at West Brom.

Although, whether he’s a realistic option remains to be seen given his £50k-per-week wages and £10m obligation fee.

And in other news, fans have been drooling over this Wednesday ‘wizard’ this week after footage emerged about him on social media…
