Sheffield Wednesday fans loved Barry Bannan’s free kick in the draw with Stoke

Sheffield Wednesday fans on Twitter were full of praise for Barry Bannan after the 28-year-old curled in a stunning free-kick to draw the Owls level in their 2-2 draw with Stoke at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Wednesday had fallen behind to a well-worked Benik Afobe goal just two minutes in and the Stoke new boy then netted again 20 minutes later to double the visitors lead.

However, Jos Luhukay’s side were back in it just two minutes later when Bannan’s long ball found experienced striker Steven Fletcher in-behind the Stoke defence. Fletcher then cushioned the ball with his chest into the path of Marco Matias, who stabbed the ball past England goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Wednesday would have to wait until the 82nd minute before Bannan popped up with the equaliser though, although it was certainly worth the wait. The midfielder’s left-footed free-kick bounced in off the post, giving Butland no chance and securing a hard fought point for Luhukay’s men.

After the game, Owls fans on Twitter were buzzing with Bannan, who had just picked up the Championship goal of the month award for his strike against Millwall. Check out some of the best tweets below.
