Sheffield Wednesday have a “good chance” of clinching loan target Connor Wickham

According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, Sheffield Wednesday have a ‘good chance’ of making their first move in the January transfer window amid reports linking them to Connor Wickham.

What’s he said?

The Owls were dealt a devastating blow last week after it was confirmed that 12-goal top scorer Steven Fletcher would be out of action for the next eight to ten weeks.

There was already a need to find an option to lessen the reliance on the 32-year-old, and now that has increased tenfold as no other squad member has found the net more than three times.

Who is most likely to leave if Wickham joins?

Wednesday made a statement on Saturday afternoon by defeating league leaders Leeds United in the Yorkshire derby, which was the first time playing in Fletcher’s absence.

Nixon was asked on Twitter about the prospect of signing the heavily-linked Wickham this month, to which he replied:

One in, one out?

Even before Fletcher’s injury, there was seemingly a need for a striking addition as the side were far too reliant on the veteran target man finding the net each week.

But that is going to be a difficult task to manoeuvre given the array of options Monk has in the department – on Saturday, he gifted a rare chance to Sam Winnall while Atdhe Nuhiu came off the bench to bag the winner.

Jordan Rhodes was named as a substitute but didn’t feature. There’s also the possibility of playing Fernando Forestieri up top should he return from injury anytime soon.

That’s four other strikers that the Owls can call upon so if Connor Wickham were to join, then surely one or two will have to leave, which Nixon hints at too.

Although, it is an encouraging sign that the south Yorkshiremen have a ‘strong shot’ at bolstering a key area in the imminent future.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness or Adrian Durham?

Who said this... “I don’t want to end up being one of those vegetarians who constantly craves a bacon sandwich.”

It will be Monk’s first move at stamping his mark down on the squad he inherited from his predecessors.

Meanwhile, Wednesday must steer clear of a potential reunion with one former loan flop as it would be a financial nightmare…
