If there was one thing Aston Villa fans had to look forward to in the Championship after their relegation from the Premier League last season, it was the prospect of facing their fiercest rivals Birmingham City.
Today sees that fixture being played out and, at half-time, Villa lead 1-0 against the Blues at St. Andrew’s.
In a match that doesn’t need any extra storylines to add to the animosity between the two sets of fans the game sees the return of former City manager Steve Bruce in the dugout of the opposition and, so far, he is getting the job done on his old club.
The goal game from Solihull-born local lad Gary Gardner, a player who knows more about this fixture than most, and you could see from his reaction as he buried a fine header that he was overjoyed with putting his side ahead.
