Joe Allen has always been a likeable player. The pint-sized Welshman is neat and tidy on the ball, technically adept and rarely gets involved in any of the less appetising aspects of the game. Liverpool fans appreciated him, too, but it quickly became apparent that he just wouldn’t fit under Jurgen Klopp and his approach to the game.
So, it didn’t come as a shock when ‘The Welsh Xavi’ departed Anfield during the summer, but what was a minor surprise is that he elected to join Stoke. Many were predicting a switch back to Swansea or a move abroad, but Allen went for the Bet365 Stadium, and it’s fair to say his move is working out…
As the numbers show following last night’s win over the Swans, the 26-year-old has been great in his opening ten games for the Potters, notching four goals and two assists while contributing more than one chance created per-game.
Indeed, his stats are far more impressive than those he was registering while at Liverpool last season, with just his passing accuracy higher at Anfield – and that’s only by a margin of 3%.
Interestingly, he’s managed more goals and assists combined that Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this season.
