Stoke City keen on Dutch star

PSV defender Erik PietersNew Stoke boss Mark Hughes is weighing up a £3m move for PSV Eindhoven defender Erik Pieters, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The ex-Manchester City and QPR coach is keen to impose a new playing style on the Potters, who gained a reputation for a direct and physical approach under Tony Pulis.

In order to this, ‘Sparky’ is keen to deploy attacking full-backs, a role that Pieters has been known to thrive in.

The 24-year-old has been impressive for PSV during the course of the last few seasons, and was in line to be Holland’s first-choice left-sided defender at EURO 2012 until injury curtailed his hopes.

Although he is a talented individual, concerns about his temperament have surfaced.

Pieters was sent off in a domestic encounter with PEC Zwolle, after which he stormed down the tunnel before punching a window, injuring his hand in the process.

PSV are aware that the defender could be keen to move to the Premier League, and may not fight too fiercely if Stoke lodge a respectable offer.

The 17 time Dutch international was linked with Newcastle last summer, but a move failed to materialise.

As well as Pieters, Hughes is said to be keen on Juventus’ Paolo De Ceglie, who is available for a knock-down figure.

Can Mark Hughes change the image of Stoke?
