Transfer imminent: Stoke on verge of announcing third summer signing

Stoke City are on the verge of announcing the capture of AFC Wimbledon defender Ryan Sweeney in a £250k transfer.

The 19-year-old has quickly established a reputation as one of the most promising youngsters in the Football League since becoming a regular in Wimbledon’s first-team squad last season.

He’s previously been linked with the likes of West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur, but Sky Sports revealed earlier this week that Stoke City had agreed a £250k transfer fee for the 6 foot 3 centre-back.

That was followed by news of Sweeney travelling to the Potteries to undergo a medical and the Bet365 Stadium outfit confirmed the situation on Twitter yesterday evening.

The Potters further revealed that the ‘formalites’ of the Republic of Ireland U18 international’s transfer are expected to be completed today – suggesting the club could make a formal announcement before the weekend.

Mark Hughes’ side face newly promoted Middlesbrough on the opening weekend of the coming Premier League season.
