Swansea City boss Graham Potter must pursue a deal for centre-back Philipp Wollscheid, who is available on a free transfer having left French side FC Metz in January this year.

What's the situation?

Swansea were relegated from the Premier League last season and subsequently sold four senior centre-backs in Alfie Mawson, Federico Fernandez, Kyle Bartley and Jordi Amat. The club are currently sitting in 7th in the Championship though after an impressive start to the campaign that has included three wins, two draws and a loss in their first six games.

Mike van der Hoorn and 20-year-old Joe Rodon have been Potter's first choice centre-backs so far this season, and the Swans have conceded just five goals in the league.

In the Carabao Cup loss to Crystal Palace though, the Swansea boss was forced to start the inexperienced pairing of 19-year-old Brandon Cooper and 21-year-old Cian Harries in order to offer his two normal starters a rest.

New signing Cameron Carter-Vickers is yet to make an appearance since his loan move from Tottenham, but Potter could do with one more defender to add to his current ranks.

Adding cover

If Potter is keen to provide more cover in case of injuries or suspensions, he should look to former Stoke defender Wollscheid as the best available option.

The 29-year-old has previously played for Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Mainz in the Bundesliga to name but a few and has also earned two caps for the German national side, proving he has the talent and experience to excel in the Championship and could help the Swans to return to the top flight.
