According to Sky Sports, Lille are in talks with Swansea City over a move for experienced midfielder Leroy Fer before the end of the month.

What's the story?

The Dutchman joined Swansea from Queens Park Rangers in 2016 and has made 98 appearances for the Swans in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

It was somewhat of a surprise that Swansea managed to keep hold of the midfielder when they were relegated from the Premier League last season, given he was one of their more high-profile players.

This term, captain Fer has scored once and provided three assists in 23 Championship appearances.

There is absolutely no question that he is one of the best players in the second tier and Swansea need him if they are to challenge for a play-off spot this season.

However, according to Sky Sports, Lille are in talks over a deal to sign the 29-year-old before the winter transfer window closes on Thursday.

What would his exit mean for Swansea?

Well, it would be a huge blow. Swansea would have known that this situation could have arrived, however, when considering that Fer's contract will expire at the end of this season.

To be honest, he is too good for the second tier of English football and it is not a surprise to see Lille linked with a move.

His exit would leave a huge gap in the Swansea midfield, whilst the dressing room would also miss his influence and experience as skipper.

Whether or not Fer leaves could well determine if Swansea have a realistic chance of challenging for a top-six spot in the Championship this season.

As a player with 123 Premier League appearances to his name, Swansea must move heaven and earth in an attempt to keep him until at least the end of the campaign.
