According to the Express and Star, West Brom are expecting Dwight Gayle, Gareth Barry and Kieran Gibbs to all return from injury in time for Saturday’s clash with league leaders Leeds.
Of the three there is little doubt that the return of Gayle from a calf injury will be the biggest boost for Darren Moore, as his side have suffered a real dip in form since the 28-year-old was forced off at half-time during the 4-1 defeat to Derby County.
In the two games that Gayle missed altogether, Moore went with Bakary Sako as the partner for Jay Rodriguez in the 1-1 draw with Blackburn, and then Harvey Barnes in the 1-0 loss to Hull.
The return of Gayle though will mean that Barnes can move back into the attacking midfield role where he has excelled so far this season. In fact, the 20-year-old Leicester loanee has netted five times and provided four assists, so expect to see him back to his best against Leeds.
Whilst Baggies fans will be delighted to have Gayle back in contention on the weekend, they will also recognise that signings must be made in the winter transfer window to ensure they are not over-reliant on the current front-three.
Gayle has netted an impressive eight goals in the league so far this season but he is only on loan from Newcastle, and without him the Baggies certainly lacked a cutting edge.
The West Midlands side did make a profit on player sales in the summer transfer window though so fans of the club will be hoping that Moore is brave and demands that investment is made to improve the squad in January.
