Oliver Burke must impress against Wigan in the FA Cup if he wants to stay at the Hawthorns

West Brom winger Oliver Burke needs to take his chance to impress in the FA Cup third round tie against Wigan if he wants to have a future at the Hawthorns, as he has failed to really impress for the club since signing for a huge £15m fee back in 2017.

What’s the word, then?

Well, as aforementioned, Burke cost the Baggies a fair bit when they signed him from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. The 21-year-old made just two Premier League starts for the Midlands club in his debut season last term, but has somehow faded out even more in the Championship under Darren Moore.

This campaign, Burke is yet to start a league game, with his only appearances from the first whistle coming in the Carabao Cup and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy whilst playing with the club’s academy side – that pretty much sums up how his West Brom career has gone so far.

There is a talented player in there somewhere, for definite. The Baggies wouldn’t have spent that much on him if there wasn’t, whilst RB Leipzig wouldn’t have signed him either if he didn’t have a bit of talent in his locker.

Last chance saloon?

It looks very likely that, if Burke is to be given another start in cup competitions this season when Wigan come to the Hawthorns, he will need to seriously impress. If he doesn’t, then the club would be wise to transfer-list him this month in order to recoup a bit of the £15m they spent on him whilst his stock is still relatively high.

Moore has guided his side to fourth in the Championship and they are well in with a chance of an immediate return to the Premier League.

As a result of that, Burke is unlikely to be given a chance to impress in the league when so much is riding on the club earning promotion back to the top-flight – it looks likely to be a do-or-die scenario for the young Scotsman, especially with Celtic sniffing around.
