The Chalkboard: Gayle should be restored to central role for West Brom

Dwight Gayle was among the goals as West Brom beat Stoke City at the weekend.

The forward has been in excellent form recently and also scored in the 3-2 loss to Middlesbrough.

On the chalkboard

West Brom’s form has fluctuated somewhat in recent weeks, winning two, drawing one and losing one of their last four games.

However, Gayle has stayed consistent, scoring three times in those games, netting once against Norwich, Boro and the Potters.

West Brom have repeatedly lined up with Jay Rodriguez as the central striker and did so again against Stoke.

But Gayle perhaps represents a better option as the Baggies prepare to take on Nottingham Forest.

Pacey advantage

Forest have a dearth of pace in defence, while Gayle has bags of it.

The former Newcastle United striker offers the perfect player to get at Forest as West Brom look to continue their promotion push.

Gayle has scored a total of 15 goals in 25 games this season in all competitions and has the eye for goal needed to help a team win promotion.

Rodriguez has the same tally but he does not offer the same searing pace, and could well be halted by Forest, who have won two of their last three games.

Gayle, then, should play up front, and look to take advantage of the lack of speed gripping Forest.
