Jimmy Shan will take caretaker charge of West Bromwich Albion when they host Swansea City on Wednesday night following the sacking of Darren Moore at the weekend, and he can make an instant impact by bringing Wes Hoolahan in from the cold.
The Baggies’ lack of quality in the final third – and some questionable defending – in their previous three Championship ultimately cost the 44-year-old his job, with one point from a possible nine available combined with Tuesday night’s results leaving the west Midlands outfit 11 points adrift of the automatic promotion spots.
One goal during that sequence – against bottom-of-the-table Ipswich Town at The Hawthorns on Saturday – was simply not good enough, when you consider they had the likes of Dwight Gayle, Jay Rodriguez and Matty Phillips on the pitch.
Hoolahan joined Albion on a short-term contract – which was extended until the end of the season last month – back in September, but he found first-team opportunities hard to come under Moore with former loanee Harvey Barnes shining.
The 36-year-old might well be.
West Brom fans will want to cover their ears for the video below…
While you will probably struggle to get 90 minutes out of him, he has that quality to make a difference – especially at home when West Brom are struggling to break defensive teams down.
The former Republic of Ireland international has rarely had an opportunity to do that having only made 10 first-team appearances and played just 114 minutes of league football, and he hasn’t even made the 18-man squad since the win against Aston Villa in February.
Shan can quickly stamp his mark on the team by bringing Hoolahan back and starting him against the Swans – potentially behind Gayle and Rodriguez – to try and get Albion back among the goals.
