Dwight Gayle has been a revelation since signing on loan for West Brom from Newcastle last summer.

His tally of 21 goals is among the best in the division. And with his future far from certain, the striker has spoken out claiming he'd like to return to the Hawthorns when his loan deal ends.

The Baggies are in with a great chance of gaining instant promotion back to the Premier League next term, occupying a play-off place at present. But if the club went up, should they consider making a permanent move for the £10.8m-rated Gayle? Football FanCast writers give their verdict on whether it would be a good idea.

Billy Meyers

"I would say no. Whilst he has been a prolific frontman at Championship level for some time now, Dwight Gayle never seems to be able to do it in the Premier League. The Englishman's best tally for a season in the top-flight is seven, whilst he doesn't offer much off the ball in terms of hold up play. Additionally, if Gayle becomes decisive in Salomon Rondon's transfer to Newcastle, the Baggies should definitely keep hold of the Venezuelan and send Gayle back to Tyneside."

James Beavis

"It should be the new manager's transfer priority. While Salomon Rondon has hit the ground running at Newcastle there will still be some Toon fans who don't understand the decision to let Gayle go last summer. 21 league goals this season show exactly what he is capable of, and given regular starts he would be a hit in the top flight. Even better news is that a big issue would be solved - West Brom would finally have a Premier League goalscorer on their hands."

Harry Elnaugh

"He was a huge success under Darren Moore and is extremely versatile. I would definitely make the move permanent in the summer but he doesn't cut it as a striker in the Premier League. Perhaps, then, he would be best suited as a winger, where he has scored a lot of goals for the Baggies this season."

Matt Dawson

"Dwight Gayle's awful Premier League record speaks for itself and should West Brom go up they'd be far better off trying to keep hold of Salomon Rondon who has proven himself a real handful for Premier League defences in 2018/19 at Newcastle. Gayle is a phenomenal Championship striker but I don't think he'll ever be able to cut it in the top flight. As such, they should look for alternatives."
