West Bromwich Albion have regained control of the Championship throne despite not coming away with a victory this weekend.

The Baggies drew 2-2 at Charlton Athletic while Leeds United were defeated by local rivals Sheffield Wednesday, handing Slaven Bilic's side a one-point gap at the top of the table.

It could have been more had Albion managed to hold on when leading twice at The Valley.

Last week, The Athletic reported that West Brom still held interest in signing Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle after failing to clinch him in the summer due to the finances involved.

Now it is believed that the 29-year-old could be available for just £8m this month, according to The Sun's Alan Nixon, which has got fans talking in the west Midlands.

The fanbase appear to be torn over whether or not a reunion would be the best thing for them right now.

Some believe it could be the difference between promotion and stumbling at the final hurdle once again...

One supporter claimed the Baggies would be runaway leaders in the Championship had Gayle been signed in the summer whilst another added that even though it would be a gamble, it could define their season with his potential addition being key to automatic promotion.

Others were more straight forward about seeing the Magpies ace back at the Hawthorns. 'Snatch their hands off' and 'buy buy buy' only go to show how desperate some are to see him return.

'No brainer' and '100%' were two other phrases used by fans to show their excitement and desire for Gayle.

Last season, he netted 24 goals in 40 league appearances but was suspended for their crucial playoff decider against Aston Villa, had he been available, would it have been a different story?

£8m was also the fee they paid for Kenneth Zohore in the summer, and the former Cardiff frontman has only returned three league goals this campaign.

It has led to many fans claiming Gayle would be a better option with one brandishing it a 'bargain.'

A further member of the Baggies faithful pointed out that he is exactly what the club have been missing this season, despite them currently sitting top of the table.

However, not all of the reaction was favourable with many pointing out his current plight at Newcastle - his injuries and inability to start have been pointed out the most...

'Too old' and 'too injured' were noted whilst another added that he hasn't proven himself in the top-flight, which is ultimately West Brom's end goal this season.

The 29-year-old has managed just 178 minutes this term, starting just two matches per Transfermarkt.

While others just couldn't foresee any deal happening...

In the meantime, manager Slaven Bilic will have to continue to trust the services of Hal Robson-Kanu, and summer signing duo Charlie Austin and the aforementioned Zohore. They have netted 17 goals between them this campaign.

The Baggies' interest in Gayle has been there for a very long time, but you'd imagine this window is the last that such a deal could occur.

It's the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?

It remains to be seen whether or not it will actually happen this time around.

And in other news, fans have been slamming one player following the draw at Charlton with him being labelled 'League One' standard...
