West Bromwich Albion drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening in controversial circumstances as Dwight Gayle’s dive provided Jay Rodriguez with the opportunity to equalise from the penalty spot in the 89th minute.
The supporters were feeling rather fortunate to come away with a positive result after a relatively underwhelming display, but there was one bright spark worth noting: the performance of Rekeem Harper.
The 18-year-old played the full 90 minutes in the league for the fourth time in the last five games, showcasing a level of maturity and confidence in his own ability which supporters are naturally drawn towards.
Players of his age seldom slip under the radar of expectant supporters, and Harper has been no exception in the Championship in recent times.
The Baggies faithful are monitoring his development with a keen eye and they were delighted with what they saw from the teenager on Tuesday.
Harper’s stunning long-range effort which crashed off the post in the build up to Jacob Murphy’s equaliser represented a moment of technical genius worth salivating over, but it was the overall quality of his performance which particularly delighted supporters.
Indeed, the academy graduate put in a fantastic all-round display in central midfield and earned gushing praise on Twitter for his efforts.
Here’s what the West Brom fans had to say about Harper’s performance against Nottingham Forest:
Rekeem Harper, my first name on the teamsheet at the minute. Not even hyperbole. Genuine statement. #WBA

Think only rekeem harper actually played well tonight. Most notable worst performances were from murphy, holgate, dawson and livermore

Understandably a lot of the talk about #WBANOT game will be about the penalty.
Two impressive displays though are worth a mention…18yo Rekeem Harper looks a real talent for #WBA while Joe Lolly continues to catch the eye for #NFFC – impressed in 2nd half

Poor tonight but came away with a point…again wasn't impressed with Murphy, and still don't understand why we are playing one of if not the best striker in the league on the wing??? MOTM Harper….he is gonna be one hell of a player…#wba

Harper was immense mate. When game was completely flat first half he stuck his foot in & tried to get things moving – 18 years old. I’ll leave it at that, MOTM

Lucky to get a draw tonight. Home form a big concern and unlikely to get top 2 if we don’t improve. Harper‘s performance one of few positives, looks a great prospect. Murphy less so… #wba

Harper absolutely superb. Thought Tosin was great, Gayle busy. Murphy awful, Livermore and Dawson even worse. Massive next four games if we're serious about automatics #wba

Where’s this new contract for Harper then people. He’s quickly becoming one of our most effective midfielders and we risk losing him for pennies this summer #wba

Rakeem Harper. What. A. Talent. #wba

Forest tactically spot on that game. Rekeem Harper looks like a cracking player. Up the Albion #WBA
