The Verdict: Are West Brom right to pursue Huddersfield Town striker Karlan Grant?

West Brom’s rumour mill is in full force this month as Slaven Bilic reportedly wants to bolster his squad ahead of an end of season title push.

The Baggies currently sit top of the Championship but have Leeds United hot on their heels as well as Brentford and Fulham who have edged back into the race for automatic promotion.

This week they were linked to Huddersfield Town striker Karlan Grant after BirminghamLive claimed the club were considering a move for him this transfer window.

It appears as if Albion are in the market for a new forward despite adding Charlie Austin (£4m) and Kenneth Zohore (£8m) in the summer.

Other players mooted with a switch to the Hawthorns include former loan star Dwight Gayle, Charlton’s wantaway ace Lyle Taylor and Mislav Orsic of Dinamo Zagreb.

However, it is believed that the Baggies could pursue Grant, who has notched 12 goals for a struggling Terriers side.

Our writers discuss the potential of a deal below, and whether or not it would be the right move for all parties.

Viji Jeevathayalan

“With promotion being the be-all and end-all this season, West Brom simply have to go all out to sign Huddersfield marksman Karlan Grant. Despite the Baggies being the top scorers in the Championship with 50 to their name, adding more goals to their arsenal could be the difference in ensuring they make the step-up to the top-flight. And in Grant, they have someone who has been in lethal form for the Terriers.

“As per Sofascore, the 22-year-old is averaging almost a goal every other game, and his 12 strikes in the Championship are significantly more than what West Brom’s forwards have delivered. His profile is perfect for Bilic, with his youth ensuring that he still has time to grow and reach his peak.

“The Baggies manager can help hone his skills as they look to reach the promised land this year. Signing Grant could be the difference-maker.”

Danny Lewis

“Grant would be a better signing than Gayle. This stance comes with the latter having struggled with injuries this season, which has limited him to just 180 minutes of Premier League football. Meanwhile, Grant has been showing how prolific he can be in the Championship, scoring 12 goals and assisting a further four, meaning he has directly contributed to more than half of Huddersfield Town’s league goals this term.

“West Brom do have firepower already, but considering how well the 22-year-old has done for the side currently sitting 20th, it would be a scary prospect for defences to face him with ammunition being provided by the likes of Grady Diangana and Matheus Pereira. That alone makes him worth getting.”

Billy Meyers

“Having splashed out such a significant sum on Zohore and Austin combined, West Brom would be greedy to spend big on another forward in Karlan Grant.

“Slaven Bilic must focus on attempting to get the best out of his two summer signings, who must’ve been signed for a reason and have only had six months to prove themselves at the Hawthorns. What would it do for their confidence if another marksman is signed?

“Grant is a good striker, and at 22, he would also represent a good long-term investment. However, the Baggies are top of the Championship and are clearly doing something right, so in my eyes, this would be nothing more than an unnecessary vanity signing in which the league’s top dogs flex their financial muscle.”

Matt Dawson

“Karlan Grant could be the final piece of Slaven Bilic’s jigsaw. If there was anything the Baggies lacked this term, it would be a natural goalscorer capable of finding the back of the net on a regular basis. Hal Robson Kanu and Charlie Austin may have seven strikes each, but Grant has 12 on his own.

“On that evidence, he’d be a brilliant signing and someone capable of taking the Baggies on an added level after stalling over the last month. Since knocking three past Birmingham over a month ago, they’ve failed to score more than twice in a match for six games in a row. Albion might well be top of the Championship, but there’s no denying they failed to really replace one of their best players from last season. This could finally be the Gayle replacement they’ve been after.

“The Newcastle man scored 24 times in 2018/19 and how they could do with a player of that ilk right now. If a sensible deal can be reached, this would be an impressive capture.”
