West Brom must sign Robert Huth to bolster Moore’s defensive options

West Brom should attempt to sign free agent Robert Huth to add to their defensive options now that the transfer window has shut and Moore is favouring a formation with three at the back.

What’s the story?

Having conceded six goals in their first three games of the season, Darren Moore deployed a three at the back formation for the first time in the Carabao Cup tie with Luton Town and the Baggies kept their first clean sheet of the campaign.

Since then, Moore has stuck with the tactic and West Brom have been in impressive form. The Baggies are now through to the third round of the Carabao Cup and are sitting ninth in the Championship having been relegated from the Premier League last season.

Moore did make additions at centre-back this summer, bringing in Kyle Bartley from Swansea and Manchester City loanee Tosin Adarabioyo to supplement Ahmed Hegazy and Craig Dawson, who unsuccessfully tried to force a move back to the Premier League but has recently been reintegrated by Moore. However, with this new formation he may be wise to bring in another option.

Experience

Huth was released by Leicester this summer after the club brought in three centre-backs, including Jonny Evans from West Brom but the ex-Chelsea defender still has plenty to offer especially in the highly competitive Championship.

The German centre-back is a three-time Premier League champion having won two titles with Chelsea and then one 10 years later in incredible circumstances with Leicester.

Now 34 years old, Huth’s lack of pace can be exposed but in a team with three centre-backs such as West Brom he would have plenty of cover and is also always a threat from set-pieces. The former Germany international would be a fantastic signing for the Baggies and would ensure the Baggies have the best backline in the Championship.
