[ad_pod ]It may seem like a long time ago now, but once upon a time, Charlie Austin was a contender for an England cap.In fact, he was once named in the squad for a friendly match against the Republic of Ireland and a qualifier against Slovenia, but he never made it off the bench in either game.Despite the fact that his international dreams are all but over he still has some strong thoughts on the national team, and he took to Twitter to share his views.

The West Brom striker was far from happy with the fact that Ashley Barnes wasn’t selected by Gareth Southgate after he scored four goals in his first three league games this season.

Austin clearly believes that his recent form should have been enough to earn him his first England call-up, but Barnes will have to wait if he wants to play for the Three Lions.

Perhaps Austin is still hurting from the fact he never got a cap despite scoring 18 Premier League goals in the 2014/15 season. He may well be irked by the fact that scoring goals regularly in the top-flight doesn’t guarantee you a chance of getting a call-up, especially if you do not play for a 'top' club.

Many on Twitter replied to the West Brom man stating that Barnes is Austrian. Although he has a cap for the Austria U20 team, he is ineligible to play for their senior side as he was denied citizenship.
