West Bromwich Albion are considering making a surprise move for highly-rated Boca Juniors midfielder Wilmar Barrios, according to El Dia.

What's the word?

After dropping into the Championship, it would have made sense if the Baggies cut down on spending.

However, such is the desire to return to the Premier League, it seems that the club are willing to go all out for their transfer targets.

El Dia reports that West Brom have an eye on Barrios, who has emerged as an exciting South American talent.

The midfielder is comfortable on the ball and can orchestrate attacking moves with quick feet.

Barrios is also strong in winning the ball back, which would suit the gritty nature of the Championship.

Do West Brom have a chance?

Rumours are rife that Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the 24-year-old, who has earned 10 caps for Colombia.

If Mauricio Pochettino is determined to land the midfielder, then it would make life very difficult for the Baggies.

Darren Moore cannot offer Premier League football or European competition to the talented player.

Barrios would certainly receive regular game time at The Hawthorns, but it is unlikely that an in-demand star would choose fighting for promotion over a top-flight title campaign and Champions League action.

If West Brom did convince the Colombian to join then the transfer would send a huge message to the club's Championship rivals.
