“You must be disciplined, young one,” warns wise West Brom boss

New West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis is willing to give star striker Saido Berahino a chance to prove his worth at the club but has also warned the youngster that he needs discipline to excel in the game.

Although the 21 year-old has run into trouble off the field recently and has been criticised for turning up late to training for the Midlands club, Pulis remains a huge admirer and wants him to be a key part of his plans at the club.

“He’s got a clean slate with me to start with – I’ve just come through the door,” Pulis said.

“I’ve been very, very impressed with his training. He’s worked very hard, he’s technically a very good player.

“He’s got his whole footballing career in front of him, he’s been given a gift by God and he’s very fortunate.

“The most important thing that he can do is make the most of it.

“He has to understand and recognise that to be a professional athlete, and a good professional athlete, you have to be disciplined.”

Berahino has been a bright spark in what has otherwise been a disappointing campaign for the Baggies, grabbing 14 goals in all appearances. However, the five that he has netted in just two games since Pulis’s arrival – including the only goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Hull City – has led to many Baggies fans hoping that he can be the man to lead the club’s revival in the second half of the season.

However, the England under-21 international has frequently been linked with a big-money transfer away from the Hawthorns in the January transfer window, with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur reportedly interested.
