It’s pretty safe to say that Charlton Athletic are not the biggest spenders in the Championship nor have they ever been ones in their modern history. Simply the fact that Jason Euell is still their record-holder when it comes to biggest purchases the Addicks have ever done tells us enough about that.
Just for some context, Euell was transferred from Wimbledon FC for a reported fee of £6.7m back in 2001/02. Fast forward about 20 years in the future and he is yet to be dethroned and to be completely honest, with all the outside circumstances and the club’s current situation on the pitch, it’s likely Euell retains his spot for a while longer.
The closest they’ve come to that figure was actually in 2005/06 when they bought Souleymane Diawara from FC Sochaux in 2006/07 for a reported fee of £4.8m and all the transfers that followed were nowhere near enough to break the record.
And interestingly enough, a similar thing can be said for their recent sales. The biggest piece of business they’ve ever done, both outgoing and incoming, is the departure of Darren Bent to Tottenham Hotspur for £22.2m back in 2007/08. That deal eclipsed Scott Parker’s £13m move to Chelsea in 2003/04.
In their more recent history, the sale of Ademola Lookman came pretty close to those sums and even made them a nice profit when they sent him Everton’s way for £7.9m in the 2016/17 season.
But needless to say, the recent years haven’t really been kind to them in the transfer market and it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the Addicks.
Even with their recent stumblings and tough times, Charlton Athletic can boast with plenty of club legends and incredible players throughout the years. Of course, if we start with their newer history, we simply can’t exclude Bent from the list.
Both his transfer in and out of the club rank quite highly on the list of the most popular deals the club has ever done. Bent was one of the most potent strikers to ever play for the Addicks and his departure is still the most lucrative piece of business ever to be done at the club.
But there are so many more who tick all the boxes. The likes of Matt Holland, who arrived from Ipswich Town, Chris Powell, the legendary Clive Mendonca who helped them clinch promotion to the Premier League for the first time ever and of course, there are even more icons such as Claus Jensen, Johnnie Jackson and Mark Kinsella.
The list could go on and that tells you enough about the history of the club as a whole. They may not spend a lot of money out there but these transfers surely made an incredible impact upon arrival.
