Of course, with Chelsea’s recent transfer ban, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the signings from a couple of years ago are still topping the charts at Stamford Bridge. All of that could change in the near future once Lampard finally opens that warchest that he’s reportedly getting for the upcoming windows but the outside circumstances might hinder that thought as well.
Be that as it may, their purchase of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Club for a reported fee of £72m is still their most expensive signing in the history of the club and the young goalie is still the most expensive goalkeeper on the planet. Of course, since then, things have gone sour for the former La Liga player but he still remains the Blues’ record holder to date.
Upon arrival, Kepa dethroned Alvaro Morata, whose £59.4m transfer from Real Madrid a year prior to that was at number one on the list until then. Sadly, Morata’s stint at Chelsea was also quite shaky and he’s been transferred to Atletico Madrid soon afterwards.
But the Blues also have a couple of famous departures and Eden Hazard’s big £90m switch to Santiago Bernabeu takes the cake as the most lucrative sale Chelsea have ever done in their history.
Where do we even start with famous Chelsea transfers? It would be appropriate to mention the one that certainly defined a largely successful era of the Blues and is now on a great path towards exactly that once again – Frank Lampard.
The current coach of the team and previously one of the most influential figures at Stamford Bridge as a player, Lampard signed from West Ham United for a reported fee of £14.4m back in 2001. The rest, as they say, is very much history.
But the boss is not the only influential figure to don the blue shirt of the London outfit. The likes of Didier Drogba, Petr Cech or Gianfranco Zola have made their mark at Chelsea and then some.
Of course, we shouldn’t forget the more modern signings of Hazard and Diego Costa and then further down the line of the new century with the likes of Claude Makelele and Ashley Cole as well.
Needless to say, it’s difficult to mention all of the famous players from Chelsea’s rich history but these are definitely some of the more prominent ones that immediately spring to mind.
