Chelsea's season has not gone according to their script, and despite an exciting and lucrative spending spree under Todd Boehly to kickstart the new era at the club, there is a battle to salvage a sliver of positivity from the campaign as it approaches the business end.

Indeed, the Blues have parted with more than £550m on the transfer front since last summer, including a £288m spree in January, but so far the new signings have failed to combine to the desired effect. Graham Potter's outfit sit a lowly tenth in the Premier League, 11 points adrift of the top four and knocked out of both domestic cup competitions at the hands of Manchester City.

To combat those woes, Chelsea might look to sign Portuguese star Goncalo Ramos later this year, with the forward recently earmarked for a possible move to Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, according to reports from Portugal (via Sport Witness) this week, the Blues' technical director Christopher Vivell is set to return for the prodigious talent after expressing an initial interest last summer.

Ramos reportedly holds a €120m (£106m) release clause, but unlike the transfer saga concerning Enzo Fernandez - whom Chelsea clinched last month after strenuous negotiation, eventually paying his £107m buyout clause in the dying hours of the transfer window - Benfica are not expected to hold out for such an exorbitant amount this time.

Is Ramos truly the dream Victor Osimhen alternative?

While it is unlikely that even an affluent Chelsea could maintain their jaw-dropping rate of spending across forthcoming transfer windows, they might look to clinch the services of a world-class centre-forward in the summer.

RB Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku reportedly has a pre-contract agreement with the west London club, but the addition of further firepower to truly get the ball rolling could well form the bulk of the impending transfer narrative at Stamford Bridge.

In potentially landing the precocious Ramos, the deadly and devastating Chelsea machine that Boehly so desires could finally start purring.

The 21-year-old has scored 19 goals and supplied eight assists from 31 outings for Benfica this season, while at the 2022 World Cup in December, Ramos netted a seismic hat-trick in a 6-1 demolition over Switzerland in the round-of-16, resoundingly asserting his authority on the biggest stage in football.

Hailed as "unreal" by CBS Sports writer Ives Galarcep, the youngster could prove to be the perfect target for Boehly and co, should the Blues' efforts to sign established phenomenon Victor Osimhen prove fruitless.

Having scored 19 goals and supplied four assists from 20 Serie A matches with Napoli this season, striking in eight successive matches at present, the Nigerian predator has attracted the attention of Chelsea, who are aware of his release clause of €100m (£88m) and might look to strike a deal later this year.

However, it is unlikely that the Partenopei will allow him to leave for anything less, as opposed to Benfica's stance on Ramos. With this in mind, targeting the more prudent route might be the more auspicious route to success, leaving a deeper purse to bolster further areas of the squad at Stamford Bridge.

As per Sofascore, the 23-cap Nigerian powerhouse is averaging 4.2 shots and one key pass per league game for Napoli this term, which bodes well for the robustness and energy of Chelsea's frontline.

Comparatively, Ramos appears to be made from the same dynamic mould, with his 3.5 shots and 0.6 key passes per league match this season (via Sofascore) hinting that he could replicate the feats that the Blues would hope that Osimhen could forge in SW6.

While Osimhen is the more established of the two marksmen, his placement in one of Europe's most formidable and high-flying teams in Napoli prevents something of a quandary in prising him away from Luciano Spalletti's plans. Ramos, who is at the early stage of what tantalises to be a remarkable career, could well be the optimum alternative.
