Crystal Palace picked up their first point of the Premier League season on Monday night as they battled to an impressive 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Patrick Vieira's side were under the cosh for much of the first half an hour but took a surprise lead through Wilfried Zaha, with the Ivorian breaking the offside trap and finishing well past Alisson after some great work from Eberechi Eze.

It looked as if Palace could come away with a historic win when Liverpool's Darwin Nunez was sent off on his home debut after a headbutt, but the Reds responded through Luis Diaz's sensational goal.

Although they had ten men, Liverpool looked very dangerous and the more likely to win it, so Vieira may well be happy to have escaped with a point.

One man who was vital to Palace aside from their goalscrer in the draw was Joachim Andersen. The Danish defender produced a heroic display, limiting the threat posed by Liverpool's fearsome front three, as the hosts managed just four shots on target in total.

Perhaps most importantly, he didn't lose his head when Nunez threw not one but two headbutts at him, which resulted in the Uruguayan being sent off and Andersen picking up a yellow.

He kept his cool to stay on the pitch and was imperious at the back as Liverpool threw everything forward in search of a winner.

As per SofaScore, Andersen would earn a 7.4/10 rating for his performance, which was the joint-best of any Crystal Palace player to start the game.

Andersen would contribute a whopping ten clearances, which was comfortably the most of any player on the pitch, and also significantly more than the 3.6 he averaged per game last season, emphasizing that he was on top form at Anfield.

The centre-back also completed three interceptions and blocked four shots, which again was more than his 2021/22 average of 1.1 interceptions and 0.8 blocks per game.

Furthermore, Andersen also won all four of his duels in the air and on the ground against Liverpool, while he wasn't dribbled past once, demonstrating shows that he had the better of Liverpool's world-class attackers, pocketing and riling new-signing Nunez up in the process.

Vieira dubbed Andersen "massively important" just a couple of months into last season and the former Fulham man lived up to that praise with a mammoth display at Anfield.
