Crystal Palace: Conor Gallagher was superb against Man City

Crystal Palace secured a memorable victory over the reigning Premier League champions after seeing off Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

The Eagles took the lead after just six minutes when talisman Wilfried Zaha fired past Ederson following some fabulous work from Conor Gallagher after he robbed Aymeric Laporte of possession inside his own half.

That passage of play set the tone for the rest of the afternoon as the Spain defender was then sent off by Andre Marriner in stoppage time at the end of the first half when, as the last man in City’s defence, he hauled down Zaha.

Pep Guardiola’s charges still had chances to level the scoreline despite being a player light for 45 minutes. Rodri first blazed over the bar following a Jack Grealish cutback before Gabriel Jesus thought he’d bagged the equaliser.

However, the Brazil international’s effort was ruled out for an offside in the build-up, and the impressive Gallagher made sure of the three points with a smart finish following Michael Olise’s layoff in the closing minutes.

Although it was Zaha who struck the opener and was the player fouled for Laporte’s red card, it was arguably Gallagher who was Patrick Vieira’s real hero on the day.

Was Gallagher Palace's best player?

Yes, definitely!

Yes, definitely!

No way!

No way!

As per SofaScore, the 21-year-old received a match rating of 9.2 out of 10 for his eye-catching exploits, the highest tally awarded to any player on the pitch.

When looking at Gallagher’s underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why that was the case. During the 90 minutes, he won a whopping seven duels, completed four key passes to his teammates and made five tackles, highlighting his effectiveness both with and without the ball.

Mark Wyatt, the Palace reporter for Football.London, was also impressed with the young loanee’s performance against City.

“Trademark pressing in midfield won Palace the ball for Zaha’s goal. Brilliant delivery into the box for Guehi in the second half. Took his goal excellently to send the ball crashing in off the post late on,” he wrote after awarding Gallagher an 8 out of 10 in his player ratings.

It was a memorable afternoon for everyone associated with the south London club, but it’s arguably Gallagher who deserves to be remembered as the real match-winner for his all-round performance.
