Palace eyeing move for Scott McTominay

Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United ace Scott McTominay this summer, and the Scotland international could be a big upgrade in Patrick Vieira’s midfield.

According to 90min, plenty of Premier League sides are showing an interest in signing the United academy graduate after they announced the signing of Casemiro recently, with the Brazilian’s arrival likely to limit McTominay’s game time significantly.

Everton, West Ham and Leicester were initially name-checked as the sides likely to show an interest in the midfielder, before journalist Dean Jones suggested in an interview with GiveMeSport that Palace could be another possible destination for the 25-year-old.

Since establishing himself in the first team at Old Trafford, McTominay has gone on to make 173 appearances for the Red Devils, in which he has contributed 16 goals and four assists.

Last season saw the midfielder make 30 appearances in the Premier League for United, in which he contributed one goal and one assist, averaging a solid 6.89 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Who is the better midfielder?

Only Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher would score higher in Palace’s squad last season, and with the latter no longer at Selhurst Park, it is clear to see the quality that McTominay could add in Vieira’s midfield.

The Frenchman may be looking to improve on ageing midfield options such as James McArthur and Luke Milivojevic, and it seems clear that McTominay would be a big upgrade on the Serbian.

After an impressive 2018/19 season that saw him hit 12 goals and average a superb 7.19 rating from WhoScored, the defensive midfielder’s performances have sadly dropped since then, with the former Olympiacos man failing to average above a 6.7 rating in the three seasons since.

Last season saw Milivojevic make just 15 appearances in the Premier League, averaging a disappointing 6.44 rating, so it is clear that, based on recent form at least, McTominay would be a better fit in Vieira’s side.

While there might be concerns about losing a leader such as Milivojevic, as he is the captain at Selhurst Park, McTominay could also be a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch and is significantly younger than the Palace man.

Thierry Henry was full of praise for the Manchester United man last season, saying:

“What I like about him right now is his maturity. On the field, and off the field, because he mentioned them sleeping in the second half, and they were sleeping, and for him to notice that although they won the game and he played well, he’s thinking about the team and the team performance.

“I can see he’s going to do better for the club, and he’s maturing a lot in terms of being a leader in this squad.”

Crystal Palace beat Sheffield United in their first game of 2021, but what was the score?

Therefore, Vieira should definitely consider a move for the £60k-per-week United man if he is allowed to leave Old Trafford this summer.
