Crystal Palace's signing of Jairo Riedewald has proven to be a huge disaster, with the Dutchman's last start for the Eagles coming in the opening game of last season.

The Eagles signed the versatile player from Ajax in 2017 in a deal worth £8m but he has made just 77 appearances in the five years since and has been very clearly surplus to requirements since Patrick Vieira's arrival at Selhurst Park.

The 26-year-old hasn't made any appearances so far this season, while last season saw him start just once in the opening game against Chelsea, making just four substitute appearances from that point on.

Unfortunately for Vieira, Riedewald would sign a three-year contract extension under Roy Hodgson in February 2021, which suggests that the French manager will have to sell the Dutchman as soon as possible, or risk keeping him on the bench until his contract expires in 2024.

Riedewald earns £55k-per-week at Selhurst Park and has been with the club for 269 weeks now, which means that the club have paid him a mammoth £14.8m in wages.

That combined with the £8m fee the Londoners paid for him has seen the Eagles spend a total £22.8m on Riedewald which, considering his lack of appearances in recent seasons, has proven to be a huge mistake.

The former Ajax man did make WhoScored for his performances in the Premier League.

Therefore, it seems clear that Vieira is not a fan of the Dutchman at all, as he has only made the bench for two of Palace's fixtures so far this season.

After the Palace boss failed to move him on during the summer, he will surely look towards the January transfer window as the ideal time to sell, or even release, Riedewald, as he cannot be allowed to steal a wage for much longer.
