Crystal Palace fans will be keeping a close eye on the progress of their players at the World Cup but Jordan Ayew did little to convince fans that he should still be a starter at Selhurst Park with his performance for Ghana.

The former Aston Villa ace, who signed for Palace in a deal worth £2.5m in 2019, came off the bench, replacing his brother Andre, in the Black Stars' 3-2 defeat against Portugal on Thursday afternoon.

While he only came on in the 77th minute, Portugal's second and third goals came in the 78th and 80th minute respectively, which suggests that his substitution did not have the desired impact for manager Otto Addo.

As per Sofascore, the Palace forward would earn a disappointing 6.4/10 rating for his performance, losing both of the duels he was involved in during his time on the pitch, while also losing possession on three occasions.

This would prove crucial, as he was caught with the ball in a dangerous midfield area for Portugal's third goal, which allowed Bruno Fernandes to break forward before feeding Rafael Leao, who put the game to bed with a composed finish in the area.

Football writer and scout Jonathan Fadugba shared his frustrations with Ayew's performance on Twitter and was particularly disappointed that he came on as part of a double substitution that saw goalscorer Andre Ayew and the dangerous Mohammed Kudus replaced.

He wrote: "Jordan Ayew for Kudus - one of the all-time worst substitutions. Immediately loses the ball for two goals. Great work Ghana."

Palace fans have unfortunately become accustomed to disappointing performances from Ayew in recent seasons, as the 31-year-old boasts just four goals and seven assists in his last two-and-a-half seasons with the Eagles.

Ayew's current contract at Selhurst Park is set to expire at the end of the season but recent reports have suggested that he could be in line for a new deal.

If his performances at the World Cup and in the Premier League so far this campaign are anything to go by, then Patrick Vieira might want to think twice about extending his stay at Selhurst Park.
