Back on September 1st 2017, Crystal Palace completed the £26m signing of Mamadou Sakho from Liverpool.

It was a real marquee signing for a club of the Eagles' stature.

The France international had previously captained Paris Saint-Germain at just 17 years of age, while also winning the Ligue 1 title and other domestic trophies with the side from the French capital.

At such a lofty transfer sum, and also with Sakho tied down to a contract worth £100k-a-week, it was a risky move from the south Londoners from a financial sense, and also one that hasn't really paid off.

In total, if you were to work out the weeks from his arrival to the current date, the centre-back has earned £13.2m in wages from Crystal Palace.

Add that onto his £26m transfer fee, and Sakho has cost the Eagles a whopping £39.2m in total.

What do Crystal Palace have to show for it?

Well, very little in truth. Apart from being a colossal defender when he gets onto the pitch, and also a classy ball-player who can thread passes to feet with ease, the Frenchman hasn't been available enough to make him worth this huge outlay.

In total, the 30-year-old has missed 44 games through injury for Palace, having suffered thigh issues, calf problems and also serious ligament damage at Selhurst Park - this season, he has made just eight appearances, one of which saw him handed a straight red card against Bournemouth.

Of course, you could argue that he has been unlucky, but that won't put nearly £40m back into Steve Parish's pockets which have been ransacked by Sakho's arrival and ultimate failure to appear consistently.

He is now an injury-prone 30-year-old whose market value has dropped to £10.8m on Transfermarkt, so it seems unfathomable that Crystal Palace will ever get close to making their money back - he has well and truly raided Parish's Selhurst Park bank account.
