Roy Hodgson's new contract at Crystal Palace has been signed, sealed and delivered.

The former England manager has signed a new one-year extension with the Eagles, which will keep him at Selhurst Park until the end of next season. In all fairness, it is something that he probably deserved purely based on the results he has managed.

With nine games of the 2019/20 campaign left, Palace are currently in 11th position with 39 points to their name - they are 12 clear of the relegation zone and should be able to fight another day in the top flight.

There are said to be assurances that he will have money to spend next summer, and some of the players who have blossomed under the 72-year-old - such as Jordan Ayew, who has eight goals so far this term - will likely be happy with the news he will be staying at the club.

Max Meyer, though, might be feeling quite the opposite.

The 24-year-old joined from Schalke in 2018, and will have been hoping to feature regularly for Crystal Palace in the Premier League. However, he has made just 13 appearances in the competition overall this term, with Hodgson instead choosing to place him on the bench.

Meyer is a technically gifted player - he played Futsal as a child, which is popular in Brazil, and he has even been dubbed the "German Messi" in the past - yet Hodgson just doesn't seem interested.

Looking at the signings the former England boss has made, there have been very few "flair" players, and even less in terms of those who have succeeded. Victor Camarasa was another who was a ball-player, yet he lasted just six months on loan before returning to Spain - he made only two appearances in all competitions.

Hodgson, it seems, is an old-fashioned manager who prefers more pragmatic players - Wilfried Zaha being the exception. Which is all well and good, but it makes Meyer's arrival totally pointless - especially considering he is earning £125,000-a-week according to Sportrac. With him having a three-year deal, that means he will cost the club £19.5m in wages - fortunately, he arrived on a free transfer.

Hodgson has got results, but it has come to the detriment of good football - Palace have scored just 26 goals in 29 league matches this season. Clearly, with the signing of the likes of Meyer, there is some kind of desire to see more a more expansive style of play, but you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Hodgson's contract, perhaps more importantly, makes little sense in this case - he cannot be trusted to generally get the most out of exciting, attacking players that will no doubt keep the fans interested.

Meanwhile, this youngster is showing shades of Wilfried Zaha.
