Speaking on Twitter, The Sun reporter claimed that McNeil was “not the priority” for Palace, suggesting that the club are focussing on other targets ahead of the Burnley man.
Sky Sports reported last week that the Eagles alongside West Ham United had approached the Clarets over a deal for the 22-year-old, with the Championship club looking for a fee over £15m for his services.
The Englishman is keen on a return to the Premier League but a deal could prove difficult due to the two years he has left remaining on his current contract.
Although a move could still happen, supporters of the South London club will be gutted to hear that he isn’t the priority at the moment.
It’s not a surprise that he wants to leave Burnley now that they are in the Championship, and his statistics prove that he’s more than good enough to be playing in the top flight.
Despite his young age, he’s already clocked up 134 Premier League appearances in five seasons as a senior player at Turf Moor. The Clarets have lost several players following their relegation, including James Tarkowski, Ben Mee and Nick Pope.
McNeil was pivotal in ensuring the club avoided the drop as long as they could, assisting 17 goals, but in the end, it wasn’t enough.
Last season he ranked in the top 4% amongst positional peers in the league for crosses into the penalty area, which proves he still has a lot to offer for clubs interested.
Recent reports have linked Palace superstar Wilfried Zaha with a move across London to Chelsea, if he leaves Selhurst Park, manager Patrick Vieira might step up his efforts to sign McNeil.
Whilst he would have big shoes to fill, it wouldn’t cost them much to sign a talented player that would fit well into a Palace side which is full of youngsters with huge potential.
Other clubs have been quick to pick out Burnley’s best players following their relegation and the Eagles should do the same.
