Crystal Palace make contact over Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Crystal Palace are interested in re-signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Manchester United and have contacted the club over a potential transfer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

What’s the latest?

In his latest column, Romano said that United are expecting offers for Wan-Bissaka and that there has been contact with Palace over the player, but no official negotiations have started yet.

Any deal would see the defender return to Selhurst Park, after initially leaving for Old Trafford back in 2019 in a deal worth £50m.

It was revealed back in April that new United boss Erik ten Hag would put five players up for sale as part of his rebuild at the club, the list included Wan-Bissaka who is deemed surplus to requirements.

It’s s surprise given the fee that the player was brought in for, but he barely featured under United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick and it looks like his spell at the club is set to end.

He’s a big Ward upgrade

The Red Devils’ willingness to sell puts Palace in a great position to bring back a player who shone for them, and he would represent a huge upgrade on their current right-back Joel Ward.

Wan-Bissaka is significantly younger than Ward so would be an investment for the long term, with Vieira needing to plan for life without the 32-year-old.

Should Crystal Palace sign Wan-Bissaka?

The United man also excelled in many defensive categories last season, proving that he would be a much better option. Wan-Bissaka made an average of 2.5 tackles per game in the last campaign compared to Ward’s 1.6.

He also provided more of a threat going forward with 23% of his crosses being accurate compared to Ward’s 9%.

Despite not being deemed good enough for The Red Devils, others think differently, with journalist Liam Canning once describing him as “absolutely class“.

Crystal Palace beat Sheffield United in their first game of 2021, but what was the score?

It’s fair to say that both can make improvements to their game, but the 23-year-old has a lot more time to do that than Ward, and will hopefully only get better.

The sticking point in any deal could come when trying to agree on a fee. United will want to recoup most of the £50m they paid for him, but that’s a lot of money for a player they don’t think is good enough.

Wan-Bissaka is also on a wage of £83k-per-week which would see him become one of Palace’s highest-paid players.

Perhaps a loan deal will be better suited to all parties in the short term as it provides a chance for Wan-Bissaka to prove his worth to the Eagles.
