Crystal Palace could be finally set to get rid of one of their toothless forwards…
According to American journalist Steven Goff, D.C United are weighing up their striking options.
One man who they are interested in is Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke, although he is considered “a longshot”.
In full, Goff said: “With MLS transfer deadline 2 days away, D.C. United continues seeking DP attacker. Three apparent finalists, including Belgian striker Christian Benteke (Crystal Palace), though he’s a longshot. Others from S America & Europe. One source rates overall chances at 70%.”
Benteke has been one of the Eagles’ more public and expensive transfer blunders, with Ryan Conway labelling the forward a “flop”.
For every goal he scored, the club has paid an astounding £1.7m and with a miserable return of just four strikes last season, Patrick Vieira will be delighted to potentially see the back of this hulking forward who doesn’t really fit into his brand of football.
The Belgian also missed eight big chances, meaning that if he does get the chances, there’s no counting on him even finishing them. For a mid-table side like Palace, these opportunities cannot be allowed to slide if they are to progress as a side.
His pass completion rate of 68.3% further supports this, as his lack of link-up play combined with his toothless nature in front of goal makes him completely unsuited to the French manager’s slick and speedy style.
Benteke has truly been a colossal waste of money, and fans of the club will be hoping that the 70% can be increased by the end of the transfer window. It’s certainly time for him to be ditched from the club.
