Crystal Palace have reportedly held talks with Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher over a potential loan move this summer.
According to Football.London journalist Sam Inkersole, Eagles manager Patrick Vieira and sporting director Dougie Freedman have spoken to the 21-year-old over FaceTime during Chelsea’s pre-season trip to Ireland.
The report added that fellow Premier League club Leeds United have put together a very impressive presentation to try and convince Gallagher to choose Elland Road as his next destination, so the Palace hierarchy may have to move quickly in order to secure their transfer target.
Gallagher enjoyed a stellar maiden top-flight campaign last term, putting in a string of impressive performances during a season-long loan spell at West Bromwich Albion despite their struggles.
The England under-21 international was unable to prevent the Baggies from suffering relegation but did manage two goals and two assists in 30 appearances for the Midlands outfit. As per WhoScored, he also contributed plenty without the ball, averaging 2.7 tackles per league game, the highest total when compared to his teammates.
With the experienced James McCarthy departing Selhurst Park following the expiry of his contract last month, the capital club’s engine room is currently rather threadbare, so the club’s supporters will surely be buzzing at this latest revelation.
However, Inkersole’s report also states that Gallagher is keen to impress Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel in pre-season as he attempts to break into their first team, having been on the Blues’ books since he was six years old.
With the likes of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic ahead of him in the pecking order, though, the youngster is aware that his game-time may be limited and is keen for regular first team minutes next season.
Therefore, Palace fans will surely be urging the club’s hierarchy to get this deal over the line, adding another promising young talent to Vieira’s setup.
The south London outfit have already raided Chelsea once this summer, signing highly-rated centre-back Marc Guehi for £18m, and Gallagher would appear to be another potentially astute acquisition.
