Crystal Palace linked with a move for Matthew Garbett

Crystal Palace could be lining up another summer signing as their squad overhaul continues to gather pace.

What’s the story?

According to The Sun, Palace are monitoring the situation of 19-year-old striker Matthew Garbett following a string of impressive performances for Swedish second-tier club Falkenbergs.

The report added that fellow Premier League duo Watford and Brentford are also interested in acquiring the services of the teenager, so there could be a closely-fought race to secure his signature.

Should Palace sign Garbett?

Fans will be buzzing

Garbett featured in New Zealand’s 0-0 draw with Romania in the Olympics on Wednesday, lining up alongside Burnley hitman Chris Wood in Tokyo.

Scouts of the three interested Premier League clubs were reportedly impressed with the London-born teenager’s display as the Kiwis clinched a historic first quarter-final spot against hosts Japan on Saturday morning.

Garbett only joined Falkenbergs back in January 2020 but has cultivated a solid reputation for himself, becoming one of the most exciting young forwards in the European game. His switch from the NZ Central Premier League followed on from his standout performances in the 2019 Under-17s World Cup, where he bagged two goals in three appearances for his side.

News of the Eagles’ apparent interest in such an exciting prospect will surely have the south Londoners’ fan base buzzing. Palace have already signed a host of outstanding talent in the current window, significantly enhancing Vieira’s first team squad, but several more fresh faces will be needed to ensure sufficient strength in depth.

Following the departure of Chelsea loanee Michy Batshuayi, the south London outfit have a vacancy in attack which needs filling ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, and Garbett could be the perfect candidate to do just that.

The youngster is unlikely to demand a hefty price tag, allowing Palace to bolster their options without draining what’s left of their transfer budget.

It remains to be seen whether Eagles chairman Steve Parish and sporting director Dougie Freedman follow up their reported interest with a concrete offer for the Falkenbergs starlet, although his potential arrival would likely be heralded as another piece of astute business by the club’s hierarchy.
