Crystal Palace can repeat Gallagher masterclass with Loftus-Cheek

Crystal Palace have been linked with re-signing Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek this summer, and if he were to move to Selhurst Park, it could prove to be a repeat of the masterclass that saw Patrick Vieira sign Conor Gallagher last season.

What’s the word?

It was reported earlier in the summer that the Eagles were keen to sign the Englishman on loan from Chelsea, as he looks set for another season of sitting on the bench in Thomas Tuchel’s side.

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, journalist Ryan Taylor shared his thoughts on a potential Palace move for Loftus-Cheek, suggesting the Eagles could well sign a player like the Chelsea midfielder.

He said: “If he becomes available and Palace are looking to sign a player of that sort of mould, then it’s a deal that makes sense. He had a great loan spell there in the 2017/18 season.”

Gallagher 2.0

Gallagher was certainly a huge hit at Selhurst Park last season during his loan spell at the club. The 21-year-old would contribute an impressive eight goals and three assists in 34 top flight appearances for Vieira’s side, averaging an excellent 7.08 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This ranked him as the club’s best performer across the Premier League season, so his loan move was obviously a success.

While the £150k-per-week Loftus-Cheek is a different style of player to Gallagher, he could add some real quality and power to Vieira’s midfield this season, all while joining from Chelsea, as his current teammate did.

Indeed, he has shown in recent seasons that he can be a top player when he is fully fit.

The 26-year-old has already shown that he can produce solid performances at Selhurst Park too, as he made 24 appearances for Palace in the 2017/18 Premier League season, contributing two goals and three assists, averaging an impressive 7.08 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

His performances that season earned him a call-up to England’s World Cup squad, so it is clear that if he can stay injury-free and enjoy regular football, then he can class himself as one of the better midfielders in the league.

Crystal Palace beat Sheffield United in their first game of 2021, but what was the score?

Rio Ferdinand is one who shares a similar point of view, showering him with praise last season, saying:

“I love him, he’s a fantastic specimen first and foremost.

“I liken him in full flow, like we are seeing him now, to Yaya Toure. He can intimidate players when he turns and gets in full pelt.”

Last season emphasised that Palace can really benefit from the loan market, and they can profit from Chelsea’s rich squad depth once again this season by bringing Loftus-Cheek back to the club.
