Despite often being overshadowed by the enormous price-tag of his regular midfield partner Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera has emerged as a crucial player in Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side.
He struggled to find his place at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal but this season, the Spaniard has established himself as the balancing act in the engine room, offering tenacity off the ball whilst maintaining the flow of supply to the forward line.
In fact, he ranks first throughout the Red Devils’ squad for tackles, interceptions and passes per match in the Premier League this season, whilst producing three assists in 19 top flight starts.
Therefore, United fans might have been surprised to hear Herrera discuss his eagerness to open contract negotiations at Old Trafford earlier this week, with his current terms due to expire at the end of next season – although there is already the option of a one-year extension.
With that in mind, we asked United fans whether the 27-year-old should be handed a new contract and the response was a resounding yes – 95% of our online poll backing the motion.
Will Mourinho oblige before the end of the season? We’ll have to wait and see.
