With the international break depriving us of domestic football for the next few days, debating over which club needs what on the transfer front is really the only topic of debate for baying football fans all over the world, considering the state of both the Scottish and English national teams.
So, we here at FootballFanCast asked Rangers fans – in light of the recently announced Championship Team of the Season – who exactly they’d like to see brought into Ibrox from the second tier of English football over the course of the summer. As Pedro Caixinha attempts to construct a rebuild ultimately capable of catching Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, a look to the Championship may be a wise idea.
The majority of the Championship’s TOTS are based at Newcastle United, Brighton and Leeds United, all clubs likely to go through major changes during the summer no matter what division they are in. Such is the insatiable nature of transfer rumours and reports, the Gers online duly replied with their wishlist based on these players.
Without further ado, here are the three stars who came out on top.
With Rangers struggling for creativity this season, it seems the fans who voted see Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey as a potential option to come in and help on that front. The England international hasn’t always convinced he has the right temperament to truly make at the elite level.
Having looked so good in the Championship with a Newcastle team who are often forced to try and break down their opposition, the 24-year-old would be a wonderful signing for Rangers. He’d help spring a counter with his masterful passing range, while also boasting the sort of engine to break behind enemy lines.
Certainly a statement signing.
Kenny Miller and Martyn Waghorn have both played well over the course of the campaign, but amassed little over 20 goals between them. If Rangers really are going to challenge their famous old rivals more seriously next year, they are going to require a marksman to guarantee them that sort of return by himself.
With that in mind, it seems the supporters would like Leeds United star Chris Wood to be that very man. The Kiwi has been in wonderful form as he spearheads Garry Monk’s promotion charge at Elland Road, scoring 24 goals for the Whites.
A clinical finisher, he’d a wonderful addition to the ‘Gers cause.
Heading back to the creative sense, Manchester City midfielder Aaron Mooy has thrived during his loan stint with the most hipster team in England, Huddersfield Town. The 26-year-old Australian must have seen international teammate Tom Rogic in Scotland with Celtic and certainly would give Caixinha’s side an added new dimension going forward.
Able to pull the strings from a central midfield role, Mooy can also operate further up the field to cause havoc in the final third. While City will undoubtedly have been impressed, Mooy will surely find it hard to break into the first-team under Pep Guardiola – so the idea of seeing him get to grips with life in Britain at a big club like Rangers is certainly an interesting one.
