Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has taken the unusual step of dumping his star striker Diego Costa via text message, leaving the Spain forward to reveal on international duty that he’s no longer in the Italian’s plans.
Where the controversial front-man ends up next remains to be seen. A return to Atletico Madrid appears to have been ruled out by their transfer ban and January rumours of a move to the Chinese Super League are yet to be revived, whilst recent reports have played down the likelihood of a switch to AC Milan.
However, one other destination does come to mind – Manchester United. After all, the Red Devils need a striker after releasing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Costa is not only one of the best in the Premier League, but also one of a rare few centre-forwards who already knows how Jose Mourinho wants his side to play.
We asked United supporters earlier this week whether they’d back a shock transfer swoop for 28-year-old and the results our poll suggest the fan base is relatively divided over the issue – with 44% voting for and 56% voting against a deal.
It would go down as one of the most controversial transfers in Premier League history, but it seems a significant minority of United fans would be on board with it.
