Bayern Munich 5-1 Arsenal may prove to be one of the most pivotal results in the English club’s recent history. Indeed, the Gunners’ star man Alexis Sanchez seems to have taken the loss particularly badly, with reports suggesting he has had a few spats with Arsene Wenger since the final whistle in Germany, while, with the French boss’ future unclear as his contract enters its final few months, it could be the game that effectively ends his last Champions League campaign with the Londoners.
These are all longer-term issues, though, and the little matter of the return leg at the Emirates Stadium awaits this Tuesday, with Arsenal not, mathematically speaking, out of Europe yet.
Indeed, if they can win 4-0 or better the Bavarians by five clear goals, if they score in London, then Wenger’s men will progress, while a mirror image of the first-leg score will at least bring extra time.
