England secured their place at the 2018 World Cup last night but following an incredibly uninspiring performance at home against a Slovenia side currently 55th in the FIFA rankings, it feels as if no place in the squad is safe for any of those most recently called up by Gareth Southgate.
Even the most-capped member of the current squad, Joe Hart, faces a battle to hold onto his No.1 jersey as competition within the Premier League continues to grow. While the 30-year-old hasn’t exactly uprooted trees since signing for West Ham on loan, Fraser Forster, Tom Heaton, Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford have all made strong cases for themselves as viable alternatives over the last few years.
With Leeds currently outside of the Premier League and by no means as linked to the national team as they once were, Whites fans are in a good position to give an unbiased perspective in the ongoing debate over who England’s No.1 should be at next summer’s World Cup.
