With the ever-dreaded international break upon us, it’s time to look ahead to the World Cup in Russia next summer.
England look certain to qualify for the tournament this week, their last two qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania suggesting relatively routine results for Gareth Southgate’s side who are currently first in Group F.
Indeed, Southgate is likely to use these fixtures to learn more about his squad while picking up the final few points needed to confirm England’s place at the World Cup, with the goalkeeping department in particular requiring closer scrutiny.
Although Joe Hart remains the first choice as England’s most experienced option, the 30-year-old faces strong competition from a cohort of impressive alternatives, not least including Everton summer signing Jordan Pickford, Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Southampton’s towering shot-stopper Fraser Forster.
