With England’s World Cup qualifying campaign coming to the most unceremonious of closes last week, namely laborious 1-0 wins over Slovenia and Lithuania, it’s time for attentions to turn to the tournament proper in Russia next summer.
The Three Lions may have topped their qualifying group but it wasn’t exactly done in style – in fact, there were very few positive performances to speak of as England struggled to see away exceptionally modest opposition.
That, however, is good news for some of the players who find themselves on the fringes of the national team, with very few of the England regulars seemingly doing enough to guarantee a place in Gareth Southgate’s plans for next summer.
That could see someone like Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey, who Transfermarkt value at £9.9million, muscle their way into the squad by the time next summer comes around – especially considering the current engine room’s lack of quality and creativity. The mischievous midfielder hasn’t featured for England since 2015.
