We all know Chelsea have one of the best academy set-ups in England. We all know Chelsea’s loan army is capable of producing top-class stars. The problem, however, is making them first team regulars at Stamford Bridge.
Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne both attest to that. Both impressed on loan elsewhere but couldn’t make a name for themselves in west London; they’re now two of the biggest stars in the Premier League, consistently doing the business for rival clubs.
But there are some signs of Antonio Conte reversing what has been a worrying trend. Nathaniel Chalobah has featured sparingly from the bench this season after a host of loan spells, whilst Nathan Ake was voted Man of the Match by Football FanCast’s Chelsea readers earlier this week for his impressive performance against Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday.
Looking ahead to which young Chelsea starlets could make the step up next season, attacking midfielder Izzy Brown particularly stands out.
He’s spent 2016/17 in the Championship firstly with Rotherham and now Huddersfield after switching loan allegiances in January and has thoroughly impressed for both clubs – notching up eight goals and five assists in 34 outings, including a strike against Wolves last night to seal his adoptive club’s spot in the Playoffs.
