HYS: Should Man United hand Herrera a new contract?

Manchester United‘s engine room is an intriguing place. Whilst the media focus is nearly always set on world-record summer signing Paul Pogba, veteran anchorman Michael Carrick and all-action Spaniard Ander Herrera have been equally influential in the Red Devils’ turnaround under Jose Mourinho.

The latter was brought to the club by Louis van Gaal in summer 2014 but struggled to find his role under the controversial Dutch coach, making just 53 Premier League appearances, out of a possible 76, over the last two campaigns.

Some queried whether the diminutive midfielder would suit life under Jose Mourinho but perhaps unexpectedly, his tenacious streak, aggression and tidy passing has made him a vital element in Man United’s midfield. In fact, it was Carrick who found himself sacrificed for Mourinho’s 4-4-2 experiment against Leicester, with Herrera keeping¬†his place alongside Pogba.

So, Manchester United fans may be a little surprised to discover that the Spain international’s contract expires in 16 months time, although the club do have the option of extending it by another year. Herrera, however, has told the Daily Mail that he’s incredibly keen to open talks over a new deal…

“So far, nothing. Of course, if they want to talk with me, I will be very happy to do that.”
