According to reports from Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are eyeing Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic as a more attainable defensive midfield target than Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier.
Recent reports from The Telegraph have claimed the Red Devils are willing to pay £40million for the England international, but MEN suggest United are concerned they’ll struggle to convince Spurs chairman Daniel Levy – a notoriously tough negotiator – into sanctioning such a deal.
Accordingly, their attentions have turned to Matic, who has lifted two Premier League titles with the Blues since Jose Mourinho brought him back to Stamford Bridge from Benfica in January 2014.
The Serbian international is certainly a talented player, but Dier is younger, more versatile and a regular in the England national team – United have often been synonymous with the Three Lions but are currently light on representatives in Gareth Southgate’s plans.
