HYS: Which competition should Everton prioritise?

The majority of Premier League clubs are preparing for their first competitive outing of 2017/18 this weekend, but Everton’s season began some time ago.

Indeed, after finishing seventh in the top flight last term, the Toffees have already taken part in a double-leg qualifier for the Europa League, beating Ruzomberok 2-0 on aggregate.

Of course, every club goes into every season looking to do as well as they can in every competition. But that rarely pans out in practice and somewhere along the line, Ronald Koeman will have to make decisions over which competition to prioritise out of the four his side are involved in this term.

Premier League remains the bread and butter but after going two decades without a trophy, winning the FA Cup or the EFL Cup would represent a significant achievement for Koeman and the Merseyside club.

Then there’s the small matter of the Europa League itself – often an incredibly arduous tournament, but one that could end in Champions League qualification for 2018/19.
